Charity and going forth

When I finally decided I was going to go on this journey and go to school in Sri Lanka I really didn’t know for sure how I was going to do it or how I was going to get there. What I did know though was that I was going to need a lot of help.

How was I going to get myself from San Diego to Sri Lanka? And even more still how was I going to be able to do a lsto over in Japan for the walking pilgrimage I have been wanting to do?

As a monk, people give me donations when I go out and perform ceremonies for celebrations and funerals. These donations are called “dana” or “charity”. It’s to help pay for clothing (robes), food, shelter, medicine, and other things that would assist with our path. I tend to use this towards reaching out to others, for example to help pay for this blog, also transportation, and often times when I see someone in need I would try to extend a helping hand by passing it forward.

I also have been saving the donations I received from performing ceremonies to find this journey, to pay for airfare and to pay for school fees when I get to Sri Lanka. Somehow I managed to save just enough for the airfare which I was able to save on by booking separate connecting flights. Although, I would have to spend some time at the airports like I am doing now here in Honolulu where I will be spending the night until my flight in the morning to Japan.

I still didn’t know how I was going to pay for school though, but I had already decided that I was going.

I told my teacher and I told some other people. Little by little people started hearing about my plans and they wanted to help. Eventually, this last 2 weeks many people helped by making donations and I am so happy to say that I have enough to pay for at least the first year of school!

They even got together and out a going away ceremony for me.

How cool is that?

I am so deeply moved by everyones kindness, generosity, and faith they have in me and my goal. It’s really overwhelming and I won’t be able to find the right words to express how unbelievable and beautiful this is.

But, I do know that the only way to do so is by moving forward and doing my best while carrying everyone hopes and faith in me… Reach my destination so I can show everyone that their faith in me is a good one and with good purpose.

It’s great thanks to them that I can share this journey on to you.
